Differences Between Globe Valves and Gate Valves
1. Structure
Gate valves are more complex. For the same diameter, gate valves are taller, while globe valves are longer. Gate valves have rising stem and non-rising stem types; globe valves do not.Gate valve sealing surfaces rub during operation and wear easily, especially under high pressure differences near closure. 2. Working Principle **Globe valve**: Handwheel rotates and lifts with the stem; has fixed inlet and outlet directions.- **Gate valve**: Handwheel stays in place while the stem lifts; no flow direction restriction.Gate valves only fully open or close with long stroke and slow operation.Globe valves have short strokes and can throttle flow; gate valves only shut off flow. 3. Performance
**Globe valve**: Used for shut-off and flow regulation. High flow resistance, hard operation, short stroke.- **Gate valve**: Only for shut-off. Near-zero resistance when fully open, easy operation, long stroke.
4. Installation & Flow Direction
Gate valves allow bidirectional flow with no installation direction.Globe valves must be installed as marked (top-to-bottom flow per Chinese standards), low inlet and high outlet, with offset pipeline.Full-open flow resistance of gate valves is 0.08–0.12; globe valves are 3–5 times higher.Globe valves have bottom-in and top-in installation modes for different diameters.
5. Sealing
Globe valve uses a small trapezoidal sealing surface; disc drop acts like a shut-off.Gate valve seals via side contact with poorer tightness; disc drop does not close the valve.
